What Does It Mean to You to be a Financial First Responder?

Being a Financial First Responder means being so proud of this team, which has helped hundreds of businesses with loans, grants, and trusted guidance to help them get through this pandemic. –KIM JACOBS, PRESIDENT & CEO, CCNY
We are saving people's financial health right now. I’m proud to be part of an organization that can help and to serve as someone entrepreneurs know they can call just for a quick pep talk during this great time of anxiety. –FERNANDO AHUMADA, VP OF LENDING, CCNY
Entrepreneurs are instrumental in rebuilding America, particularly in Black and Brown communities where people have less access to traditional bank sources of credit. I am truly touched to be on the CCNY Board and to witness the impact we've made together. –YVETTE WYNN, CCNY BOARD MEMBER
We are proud to be an advocate for small businesses as they navigate emergency lending options. Because of strong public-private partnerships, like the one we share with CCNY, our community couldn’t be in a better position to make it through this together. –DR. MARSHA GORDON, PRESIDENT/CEO, THE BUSINESS COUNCIL OF WESTCHESTER
I'm proud to be a part of the CCNY team that stepped up to support the small business community with the emergency lending program. Our clients trust us to guide them in the right direction during these challenging times. –JULIETA MCPHERSON, VP OF BUSINESS ADVANCEMENT, CCNY
The IDA and Business FIRST loan and grant programs provided critically needed funds to small businesses across the county. I hope in 2021 we are able to do more. –BRIDGET GIBBONS, DIRECTOR, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, WESTCHESTER COUNTY
I take great pride in our Westchester community. Our neighbors and friends own our small businesses. It was a blessing to support them via the Rent Grant Assistance Program with CCNY. –SANDY WOLMAN, FOUNDER & PARTNER OF WESTCHESTER ANGELS
Westchester Community College works with partners like Community Capital New York to ensure that small businesses receive the training they need during this crisis such as access to financial resources workshops. –ERIDANIA QUINN, PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR, WORKFORCE PROGRAMS, WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
I am proud to be part of a team that understood what small business owners needed and had the tenacity to roll out an emergency loan to support them quickly. It was greatly satisfying to provide immediate assistance. –RACHAEL DUBIN, SR. VP OF LENDING, CCNY
We have had all hands-on deck, standing on the front lines as Financial First Responders in ways I could never have imagined. New loan products, trusted business guidance, and powerful collaborations with our decades-long base of community partners - resources that are helping to stabilize and reset our local neighborhoods. –KIM MEYERS, EXECUTIVE VP, STRATEGY & DEVELOPMENT, CCNY
Our Mentors help small businesses adapt to the new reality, and Community Capital New York brings that vision alive. We are proud to partner as Financial First Responders together. –DAVID KELLOGG, CURRENT CHAIRMAN, SCORE
This is a very proud moment for me. During the most challenging moment, CCNY rose to the occasion. When we blew through the capital for the Emergency Express Loan Program, the Board unanimously supported an increase. With no questions asked, the team said, "we can do it." –BILL MERZ, CCNY BOARD CHAIR
I am proud to have supported small businesses through CCNY's emergency express loans at a time of great uncertainty. The small businesses were grateful to access capital to pay their rent and keep their employees. –ELISSA BARD, VP OF HOUSING, CCNY
Supporting small businesses with emergency lending has been a profound experience of empathy for me. I've learned about equitable financing and how uneven the playing field is for many entrepreneurs. –WILL KRITZER, CCNY INTERN
I am honored to be part of a hardworking team that goes above and beyond to support small business owners across the Hudson Valley. We are doing all we can to help sustain them. –KELLIE DALLURA, LOAN ASSOCIATE, CCNY
We serve as a calm voice, providing clarity to help our clients regain their strength and resilience. We continue to focus on clarifying available information, creating cash flows, and helping businesses reinvent themselves. –CLAUDIA URIBE, DIRECTOR OF SERVICE DELIVERY, THE ACCELERATION PROJECT
Witnessing the sheer emotional relief of 100+ new clients as I closed Emergency Express Loans on Zoom reminded me why I've worked at CCNY for over 30 years. And to hear how they were giving back, despite their own challenges, truly moved me. –CAROL DANZIGER, FINANCE DIRECTOR, CCNY
CCNY has been in the trenches for 30 years, and yet remains nimble. We knew who would need the most help, and raced to resolve the need. –MANDY KELSO, CCNY BOARD
Showcasing the pivot stories of our courageous and innovative clients as they reinvent themselves, care for their employees, and give back to their communities has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. –JULIE FAHNESTOCK, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING, CCNY

× SADIE MCKEOWN Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Offcer | The Community Preservation Corporation

"There are lots of ways to be a Financial First Responder. Delivering capital to communities in times of crisis is critical. At The Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), we maintain that level of urgency in communities that struggle daily. CPC was founded to be a source of stable capital in marginalized communities when other institutions couldn't or wouldn't invest in their future. Our success relies on public-private partnerships and working with like-minded organizations like Community Capital New York, dedicated to providing capital to people and places that face systemic barriers accessing it.

As we experienced the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of financial first responders was to push the money out immediately to resource our hospitals, first responders, essential workers, and small businesses. It was life and death and economic survival. Eight months later, we see the longer-term effects, and we can't afford to take housing security for granted.

We had a national housing affordability crisis affecting millions of people before COVID-19. Now, amid this pandemic, the same communities that are the most underserved and have historically had the least access to capital are the ones who are hit the hardest. We have to be resilient, keep fighting, and do even more to build an inclusive economy, one that works for all of us.

At CPC, we use the term "capital workers" because we not only provide access to stable capital to owners in low-income neighborhoods, we build their capacity to invest in and own multi-family real estate. I am grateful to be part of a community of financial first responders who have served New York State together during one of the most challenging times in our history."

× LEE LASBERG President | Lasberg Construction Associates, Inc.

"For 30 years, we've made loans that no one else will make. Somehow we've done it, and we are growing to address an increasing need. And now, we're helping more people than we've ever supported before. That is something to be proud of.

I believe it's because we know how to leverage one-dollar multiple times. We are often the last or the only funding option for businesses that cannot source funds through conventional lending sources. And we don't just lend money. We provide financial education, which helps our loan recipients and also protects our investment. And now more than ever, the Board and the team at CCNY are doing all they can to help small businesses pivot.

Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and employ almost 65 percent of our overall workforce in this country. When they fail, it is more than just a business closure. It equates to job losses, vacant real estate, diminished tax revenue for municipalities. The loss of small businesses impacts every part of the community—because they are the community. Main Street holds the strength and resilience of community culture, so we must fight for them.

CCNY and I have always been a good fit. My experience and knowledge in real estate development and construction allow me to provide guidance and insights valuable to the organization. It's an incredible opportunity to work with an enthusiastic group of local business leaders committed to making an impact and improving people's lives."

× MEGHAN TAYLOR Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Relations | Genting New York State

"Upon reflection of the past year, there is one word that resonates, resilience. For many people, 2020 is to be remembered for COVID-19 and the economic fallout, for the divided communities across the country, and our nation's uncertainty. However, I will remember 2020 being the year where, in the face of unprecedented challenges, government agencies, non-profits, and for-profit businesses came together to stabilize the economy and our communities. Like Empire State Development, government agencies worked tirelessly to provide information, resources, and tools to businesses large and small to combat the impacts of COVID-19. I was truly honored and proud to work beside my colleagues at Empire State Development during one of the most trying times our economy has seen. When businesses are closed, and unemployment is rising, it is more important than ever for government agencies to provide resources to businesses and communities that allow them to weather the storm. Our businesses are the heartbeat of our economy, and its people who power our region.

The pandemic has taken a toll on the Hudson Valley. Still, the resilience of our businesses and our sense of place and community will be the reason why we can all look forward to a bright tomorrow for our region and state.  We could not have done it without partners like Community Capital New York. We have been in alignment to meet the community's needs together for years, and this moment in time proves the value of our collective impact."
